Elect Cobb to Assembly seat
Reno Gazette-Journal

Ty O. Cobb is a newcomer to Nevada politics who has a
long list of public service accomplishments that prepare
him to represent the voters in Assembly District 26.
Conservative and longtime Nevadans can identify with
Cobb and his political views. They should send him to
the Assembly.
A Republican, Cobb hopes to succeed Sharron Angle,
who lost her seat in the primary. Also a conservative,
he emphasizes accountability and sustainability as a
public policy philosophy for issues of education, growth
and natural resources.
Cobb would use a state budget surplus to provide
property tax relief and for roads. He supports tougher
penalties to deter graffiti. He wants to allay fears
about eminent domain, saying localities should not be
able to take private property and give it to another.
Water resources management is dependent upon ensuring
that water rights actually represent existing water and
allocations should be managed professionally.
He wants a study of the effects of illegal
immigration on education, scholarships and other areas,
and he would require proof of citizenship before
awarding state benefits. Regarding problems in Nevada
schools, the remedy is not necessarily spending more,
but greater accountability, he argues.
An associate attorney at the law firm of Jones
Vargas, Cobb's background includes assignments with the
U.S. Marine Corps and helping to coordinate
democracy-building activities in Baghdad for the
Coalition Provisional Authority. He served as a civilian
aide in the U.S. Department of Defense. Prior to that he
held a variety of public service positions, including
law clerk in Nevada's Second Judicial District for Judge
Steven Elliott, special assistant to Virginia Gov. James
S. Gilmore and legal clerk in the Sacramento District
Attorney's Office.
Cobb is running against Democrat Richard J.
Hardenbrook, who retired after a 32-year career with the
Carpenters Union and who worked for two years as
political liaison for the organization. Hardenbrook's
major public interests lie in issues related to
wildlife, land grants and the Nevada Division of
Forestry.
Cobb has lived elsewhere in the nation and the world,
but says he always has seen Nevada as home. He says he
"wants to be a voice for Northern Nevada," and "has made
the people's issues his issues ... for the greater
good."
Voters in Assembly District 26 should choose him to
represent them.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Assembly Candidate Ty Cobb Tours Flood Area with Army
Corps of Engineers
Group examines Incline Stream Reclamation and Truckee
Meadows Flood Control
Reno, Nevada—State Assembly candidate Ty Cobb
(R-District 26) joined a group from the Army Corps of
Engineers to discuss local areas afflicted by flooding
from last weekend’s storm and tour Incline Village
stream reclamation projects. Mr. Cobb discussed current
and proposed projects to control flooding in the Truckee
Meadows with John Paul Woodley, Assistant Secretary of
the Army for Civil Works.
Secretary Woodley is the top Defense Department official
responsible for overseeing all work projects performed
by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
Secretary Woodley and Mr. Cobb were colleagues while Mr.
Cobb served at the Pentagon under the Deputy Secretary
of Defense.
“In early September of last year, Secretary Woodley told
me of his intention to visit Lake Tahoe to view the
current and proposed Tahoe stream reclamation work of
the Corps of Engineers,” said Mr. Cobb. “At the time, I
took the opportunity to discuss with the Secretary not
only the important work of the Corps in designing stream
reclamation for Incline Village, but also of the
pressing need for a Flood Control Project in the Truckee
Meadows. I strongly encouraged him to add time to his
trip to discuss Truckee Meadows flood control and, due
to the hard work of the Truckee River Flood Project
Coordination Committee, he was able to add the Truckee
Meadows to his itinerary. I am pleased Secretary Woodley
was able to devote time to both areas.”
This week Mr. Cobb joined Secretary Woodley and members
of his staff in examining the need for reclamation work
on more than 60 streams within the Incline Village area.
Specifically, the Corps looked at how they could aid in
the design of waste water and sewage abatement to avoid
erosion problems that have cut visibility in Lake Tahoe
by 30-percent in the past few decades.
Additionally, Mr. Cobb and Secretary Woodley informally
discussed the progress of a proposed $350-million flood
abatement project with members of the Truckee River
Flood Project Coordination Committee.
“Secretary Woodley made it clear that the Corps of
Engineers is overwhelmed with project proposals from
across the nation,” said Mr. Cobb. “However, he did
state that due to our proactive efforts in uniting the
region behind the project and hiring a seasoned
professional like Naomi Duerr to head up planning and
implementation, we have certainly created a favorable
environment for accessing aid.”
Additional Corps tour agenda items included a focus on
the Environmental Improvement Program of 1998 as
authored by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). A
group of interested parties, including the Lake Tahoe
Water Quality & Transportation Coalition, North Lake
Tahoe Resort Association, and League to Save Lake Tahoe,
met with Secretary Woodley and Mr. Cobb to discuss
moving forward with this initiative.
For more information on the proposed flood control
projects or to schedule an interview, please contact Mr.
Cobb directly at 775-287-4827 or tyocobb@aol.com.

Ty Cobb tosses hat in State Assembly race
BY TOM DARBY
tdarby@sparkstribune.net
Fifth generation Nevadan Ty Cobb, 30, officially
announced his candidacy yesterday for State Assembly
Seat 26. Encouraged by widespread community support,
Cobb, a Republican, stated that quality of life, smart
growth, fiscal responsibility, and accountability in
education would be his main issues once elected.
“We in Northern Nevada have many issues to confront in
the coming years,” said Cobb. “And I look forward to
taking the lead in helping to deal with them.”
Hailing from a long line of Nevadans, Cobb’s family
first arrived in Northern Nevada during the mid-1800s.
His great-grandfather, Sam Cobb, was a Civil War veteran
who settled in Virginia City in 1864. Sam’s son, Will
Cobb, served as sheriff of Storey County and later
became a State Assemblyman and State Senator.
On Cobb’s mother’s side, his great-grandfather, Fred
Small, served as the head of the Board of Education for
Churchill County and later became a State Assemblyman.
Cobb’s namesake, Tyrus Richard Cobb, was a 60-year
employee of the Reno Gazette-Journal most notably
serving as Editor-in-Chief and author of the popular
editorial column, “Cobbwebs.”
His father, Tyrus William Cobb, served 26-years in the
United States Army and worked as Special Assistant for
National Security Affairs for President Ronald Reagan.
Cobb and his fiancée, Emily Wofford of Sparks, both live
in Northwest Reno and their parents reside within Washoe
County in Sparks and Reno.
According to Bill Raggio, R-Reno, State Senate Majority
Leader, Cobb has proven himself in Nevada, the U.S. and
overseas.
“I am pleased to join Senator Randolph Townsend in
wholeheartedly supporting Ty Cobb for the Assembly in
District 26. As a fifth generation Nevadan, Ty has
proven himself worthy of his deep roots through his work
in our community and on behalf of our country both here
and abroad,” said Raggio. “I am certain that Ty will be
a wonderful representative for northern Nevada and the
citizens of District 26 and I look forward to working
with him closely in the upcoming Legislative Session.”
Cobb has experience at both the federal and local levels
of government and currently serves as an associate with
Jones Vargas, one of Nevada’s oldest and most
prestigious law firms.
“There is no way I’m going to give up my practice,” Cobb
said. “I plan to work as a citizen legislature. With
that in mind, I’ll need to have a job outside of the
government.”
Cobb previously served as an Aide to the Deputy
Secretary of Defense. His area of responsibility
included the Base Realignment and Closure Commission,
the Quadrennial Defense Review, and the Joint Improvised
Explosive Devise Defeat Task Force.
Before joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense,
Cobb worked as a defense analyst for the United States
Marine Corps Headquarters located inside the Pentagon.
However Cobb’s national security issues and democracy is
best demonstrated by his time spent with the Coalition
Provisional Authority in Iraq. Based in Baghdad from
December 2003 to June 2004, Cobb served dual roles as
the National Regions Coordinator for Democratic
Initiatives and as head of the Baghdad Region Civic
Education Program.
“Education is one of my most important priorities,” said
Cobb. “Our children should come first. We need to make
sure that they have all the learning resources available
to them possible.”
Cobb said his work contributed to the fledgling
democracy’s political process and led to the eventual
success of the first free elections in Iraqi history.
State Senate Commerce & Labor Committee Chairman
Randolph Townsend, R-Reno, said that he was pleased to
support Cobb’s candidacy along with Raggio.
“Senator Raggio and I have been working together in the
Legislature for 24 years to serve the needs of Nevada.
We are very pleased to support Ty Cobb for State
Assembly to bring his energy, enthusiasm, and particular
expertise to this office to help us with the important
work ahead,” said Townsend. “Senator Raggio and I agree
that Ty will be an effective advocate for the issues
that face Northern Nevada and he will be an outstanding
Legislator as well.”
Before serving in Iraq, Cobb was law clerk to Second
Judicial District Judge Steven Elliott at the Washoe
County Courthouse. While in Reno, Cobb was active
politically. Cobb co-founded and worked as Executive
Director of United Nevada. He is a strong advocate of
animal welfare and worked to pass an initiative for a
new shelter for the Washoe County Regional Animal
Services.
“I don’t take this step lightly,” Cobb told the Sparks
Tribune. “In fact, without the strong encouragement and
support of family members and friends in our community,
I wouldn’t take this step at all.”
Cobb holds a law degree from the University of Pacific
McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, Calif. He was
admitted to federal practice and passed the Bar Exam in
both Nevada and California. Cobb earned his Bachelor of
Arts degree in Political Science from James Madison
University in Harrisonburg, VA.
