Dedicated to public service, Ty Cobb has experience at both the federal and local levels of government.
Mr. Cobb served as Aide to the Deputy Secretary of Defense. His area of responsibility included the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission, the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR), and the Joint Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) Defeat Task Force. Prior to joining the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Mr. Cobb worked as a defense analyst for the United States Marine Corps Headquarters located inside the Pentagon.
Mr. Cobb's commitment to national security issues and democracy is best demonstrated by his time spent with the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq. Based in Baghdad from December 2003 to June 2004, Mr. Cobb served dual roles as the National Regions Coordinator for Democratic Initiatives and as head of the Baghdad Region Civic Education Program. This significant work, contributing to the fledgling democracy's political process, led to the eventual success of the first free elections in Iraqi history.
Prior to serving in Iraq, Mr. Cobb was law clerk to Second Judicial District Judge Steven Elliott at the Washoe County Courthouse. Mr. Cobb has been active both politically and within the community. He co-founded and worked as Executive Director of United Nevada, a diverse group of leaders dedicated to positive change within the Truckee Meadows. He is a member of numerous community groups such as Reno Downtown Rotary and the Reno Sons and Daughters of Erin- a group that was co-founded by his grandfather in 1969.
Hailing from a long line of Nevadans, Mr. Cobb's family first arrived in Northern Nevada during the mid-1800s. His great-great-grandfather, Sam Cobb, was a Civil War veteran who settled in Virginia City in 1864. Sam's son, Will Cobb, served as sheriff of Storey County and later became a State Assemblyman and State Senator. On Mr. Cobb's mother's side, his great-grandfather, Fred Small, served as the head of the Board of Education and Sheriff for Churchill County and later became a Reno State Assemblyman. Mr. Cobb's namesake, Tyrus Richard Cobb, was a 60-year employee of the Reno Gazette-Journal most notably serving as Editor-in-Chief and author of the popular editorial column, "Cobbwebs." His father, Tyrus William Cobb, served 26-years in the United States Army and worked as Special Assistant for National Security Affairs for President Ronald Reagan. Mr. Cobb lives in south Reno and has a daughter, Lizzie, who is a sixth generation Nevadan.
Mr. Cobb holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law located in Sacramento, California. He is admitted to federal practice and in both Nevada and California. Mr. Cobb works in the private sector as the General Counsel to a Nevada company.
